loweel-2016-012016-01-14 22:27 I need to clearify the previous post. I take advantage of working in the telco “mobile” planet.
Gotenna is using Bluetooth between your Mobile Device (and/or a PC, then) and your own antenna. Not for linking each other, of course.
Between antennas it uses a part of VHF Spectrum which is named MURS. Multi Use Radio Services. This is 100% free in the US and in general in north America, if the emitter is below 1.5W. This is a limit of coverage, more or less ~3Km in the city, 6 on the countryside, until the antenna is on some elevated place. Frequencies are between 151Mhz and 154Mhz
In europe MURS are regulated as the document attached ti this post , which means they are “reserved for broadcasting”. So in theory , it should be possible to use them as well. Not clear if some single country can request a license, like for CB.
What’s new then with GoTenna? What makes GoTenna different than any Walkie-Talkie or a Prodel, is that they implemented a CDR, a Cognitive Digital Radio. This means the devices are not “paired by frequency”, they are ” digitally meshed” and they are able to change the topology of links when a new device enters or exits the network. Warning: this implementation is proprietary. The point is, I would like to try assigning two IP address to the Bluetooth Interface (using Linux bt stack) , to see if it is possible to use it for IP transmission, and maybe VPNs.

2016-01-14 22:08 No, no, no. Maybe I expressed me very bad. It connects with a PC/Mobile via Bluetooth. Then it is a totally different radio bridge.

2016-01-14 11:18 The amazing stuff of GoTenna is that it works on bluetooth. Now, Linux can use a bluetooth link to do IP. So , if my understanding is correct and Gotenna can offer 8Km of radio bridge, to cover an entire city with a MeshNet could be fairly easy. I wonder if this use of radio is permitted in Europe.

2016-01-13 18:44 loweel favorited something by giaco: “goTenna is a small, rugged device that pairs wirelessly with your smartphone to allow you to communicate directly with others even when you don’t have service—no towers, wi-fi or satellites required. goTenna works anywhere on the planet, enabling you to connect privately and free of subscriptions or fees, with anyone else who has the device.

We came up with the idea during Hurricane Sandy when a quarter of cell towers were downed. Beyond an emergency situation, the use-cases became apparent everywhere: hiking in remote areas, traveling abroad, attending large events. Our goal is to empower people to communicate directly without having to rely on central connectivity.”

2016-01-13 15:22 I remember lot of people was interested in local mesh networks. If you are mesh-sexual, 🙂 just google for “gotenna” and get your boner. Do you imagine this, used for # networks?
